ALL ABOUT: THE QUEEN BLACK BEAN

Here’s everything you need to know about the Queen Black Bean — from their rich, earthy flavour, to why they BOSS IT in Mexican cooking, and why they’re big on the big P - POLYPHENOLS. Whether you’re here for recipe inspiration, gut-friendly fibre or to just become even more bean obsessed, this guide has you covered.

The Lowdown

Small but mighty, black beans have a rich, earthy flavour and a soft, creamy interior. Although they’re smaller than a Queen Chickpea + Butter Bean, this DOES NOT mean they are any less delicious. They’re hearty enough to stand up in tacos, burritos, and chilli, but equally work so well in salads due to their smaller size, meaning you get a good mouthful in every forkful.

Are they the same as turtle beans? Turtle beans are a variety of black beans, but have a slightly different taste or texture than others but it fits the same family. Not to be confused with black soybeans, which are a completely different species.

Black beans are culinary icons in Brazil’s feijoada - a Cuban black bean soup, and countless Mexican dishes that we know + love - think spicy tacos, loaded nachos + cheesy chipotle quesadillas

QUEEN BEANS

Where They Come From

Each bean variety is suited to different growing conditions, we source our beans from the best possible climate for each one. We also choose the best beans from the most recent harvest, meaning we have the FRESHEST beans, specially selected for quality and FLAVOUR.

Our Queen Black Beans are currently sourced from Canada - as that’s the climate + soils they THRIVE in. Harvest season peaks at the end of August, ensuring we can select the freshest, plumpest, TASTIEST beans.

QUEEN BEANS

How we cook them

Once they reach our factories in Spain, they get poured into glass jars with just water + a pinch of salt. They are then cooked in the jars in a giant pressure cooker, and cooked low + slow. This method locks in flavour, keeps the skins intact, and gives you a bean that’s creamy, tender, and perfect to eat STRAIGHT FROM THE JAR. It also gives you that luscious, creamy “bean stock” - aka, the liquid in the jar.

DON’T FEAR THE BLACK STOCK - this is totally normal and is just a process of Oxidisation. When a darker beans meet air, they oxidise – that just means their natural colour deepens over time. It’s the same kind of process that makes an apple go brown once it’s sliced 🍎Because we don’t add preservatives, this little bit of colour change is TOTALLY normal. It just means you’re getting the real deal 🙏

Stock from black beans is a little thicker than our chickpeas + butter beans due it’s higher starch content. We season our beans throughout the cooking process like proper chefs do!

Are they good for you?

BIG YES. They are a nutritional powerhouse.

Per 100g, they offer around:

Protein: ~8g | Fibre: ~8g | Calories: ~130 kcal | Iron: ~2mg

But the big standout? Black beans are rich in POLYPHENOLS, especially anthocyanins - the same antioxidant compounds found in blueberries. These are linked to better heart health, improved cholesterol levels + anti-inflammatory benefits.

They’re also high in fibre, which supports digestion, helps control blood sugar, and keeps you fuller, more energised + HAPPIER for longer. And yes, they’re naturally gluten-free.

HOW TO USE THEM – BEANSPO!

Earthy, hearty, and a little nutty - black beans shine in traditional Mexican dishes, but we also love them with punchy Asian flavours too like miso + soy.
