ALL ABOUT: THE QUEEN BUTTER BEAN

Here’s everything you need to know about the Queen Butter Bean - from what they taste like, where they come from, to their nutritional superpowers + the MOST DELICIOUS WAYS to cook with them. Whether you’re here to boost your gut health, expand your recipe repertoire or just obsess over yet another bean, this guide has you covered.

The Lowdown

Plump, velvety and deliciously creamy - we call our Queen Butter Bean nature’s gnocchi. And for good reason! These HUGE beans have a silky bite that holds its shape beautifully, meaning they steal the show in any salad, or for soaking up your favourite pasta sauces - just like this butter bean puttanesca. Just TRY to resist spooning one straight from the jar.

Are they the same as cannellini beans? Not quite. Butter Beans (also known as lima beans) are larger, creamier and have a more mellow, almost buttery flavour compared to the smaller, slightly firmer cannellini. Read all about the white bean family here.

Grown in warm climates, they’ve been loved for centuries in Mediterranean and South American cooking - from Spanish fabada, to Greek gigantes and Peruvian stews.

QUEEN BEANS

Where They Come From

Each bean variety is suited to different growing conditions, we source our beans from the best possible climate for each one. We also choose the best beans from the most recent harvest, meaning we have the FRESHEST beans, specially selected for quality and FLAVOUR.

Our Queen Butter Beans are currently sourced from Poland - as that’s the climate + soils they THRIVE in.

QUEEN BEANS

How we cook them

Once they reach our factories in Spain, they get poured into glass jars with just water + a pinch of salt. They are then cooked in the jars in a giant pressure cooker, and cooked low + slow. This method locks in flavour, keeps the skins intact, and gives you a bean that’s creamy, tender, and perfect to eat STRAIGHT FROM THE JAR. It also gives you that luscious, creamy “bean stock” - aka, the liquid in the jar. We season our beans throughout the cooking process like proper chefs do!

Bog standard supermarket beans are heated up quickly, to a SUPER high temp, losing the banging beany flavour along the way.

We NEVER add anything artificial. No preservatives, no weird sulphites, just what you’d use at home: beans, water + salt.

Are they good for you?

The short answer? ABSO-BEANY-LUTELY.

Butter beans are naturally low in fat, high in plant-based protein, and loaded with fibre.

Per 100g, they offer around:

Protein: ~7g

Fibre: ~5g

Calories: ~115 kcal

Iron: ~2mg

That means they’re brilliant for gut health (thanks to the prebiotic fibre), heart health, and keeping you full for longer - all while being naturally gluten-free too. Their slow-release energy also makes them a great choice for anyone looking to balance blood sugar or reduce snacking.

HOW TO USE THEM – BEANSPO!

Creamy, tender, melt-in-the-mouth delicious - we urge you to first try simply dressed in olive oil + lemon zest to appreciate them in their true glory.

But beyond that, the fact that they are like “nature’s gnocchi” also makes them perfect to sub into your favourite pasta dishes. Think butter bean carbonara, puttanesca or arrabbiata. The creamy beans soak up the sauces + hold their own, just like any pasta shape would.
